How I Test Rowing Machines

Many “best rowing machine” pages claim they have tested dozens of machines. I doubt that you learn much from 20 minutes on 90 rowers. What matters is whether you still enjoy the machine after six months.

What I do

Coros Pace 2 smartwatch test

  • I use each machine for weeks to months in a real family home, not in a gym.
  • I compare the resistance types directly against each other (water, air, magnetic, dynamic), sometimes three machines at the same time.
  • I record my own data: stroke rate, pace, power curve, heart rate (chest strap and wearables) and the connection to apps (ErgData, EXR, Kinomap, SmartRow, Zwift).
  • I check noise, footprint, assembly, build quality and repairs.

Criteria

Criterion What I check
Rowing feel Drag curve, smoothness, dynamic or static
Data and apps Bluetooth/ANT+, open standards, accuracy compared with power meters
Noise Measured in dB, plus feedback from the household
Space Dimensions, storage, upright storage
Durability Months of use, defects, spare parts, warranty
Price Purchase price and running costs, not the list price

How the machines reach me

Assembling a Half Human rowing machine

Every test states whether I bought the machine myself, borrowed it or received it free of charge. Affiliate links are marked. Neither influences the rating. A bad result gets published.

Corrections and updates

Every test shows its publication and update dates and a short change log. Found a mistake? Write to me, I will correct it and note the change. More in the Editorial Policy and on the About page.
